Silky Delicious Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting

Most frostings are delicious, but this one? This one is next-level indulgence. Combining silky smooth cream cheese with rich chocolatey flavor with just the right amount of cream cheese tang–I’m sold! This to-die-for chocolate cream cheese frosting is perfect for cakes, cupcakes and anything else that deserves a little extra oomph. It’s a lovely alternative to classic American buttercream because it’s rich without being heavy, sweet but not overpowering, and so irresistibly creamy that you’ll want to eat it straight from the bowl!

I love cream cheese frostings in general because they have the most amazing texture. They are also incredibly versatile. They can be spread and piped just like buttercream, but with a less sweet and more tangy flavor. It pairs well with so many types of desserts. However it is important to note that it’s not as stable as buttercream, so it’s less suitable for frosting entire cakes or holding its shape on hot summer days.

Vanilla cream cheese frosting is the classic cream cheese frosting flavor, but you can make cream cheese frosting in many different variations. Check out my Nutella cream cheese frosting and raspberry cream cheese frosting, for instance! Today, I’m sharing a recipe for chocolate cream cheese frosting, which I love to use for filling or piping on top of chocolate cakes and cupcakes. It has the most amazing deep chocolate flavor with a silky smooth texture that practically melts in your mouth!

Tips for Making Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting

  • The texture of cream cheese frosting depends on the temperature, as it primarily consists of butter and cream cheese. If the room is too warm, the frosting can become very soft and may even melt. So it’s important not to let the butter get too warm and soft when whipping the frosting, and the cream cheese should be used straight from the fridge.
  • Using a stand mixer is ideal for creating the most fluffy texture, but a hand mixer will also do the job.
  • Adjust the amount of milk to achieve your desired consistency, whether you need the frosting for piping or spreading. If your frosting turns out too soft, you can always add a bit more powdered sugar. Let your frosting cool in the fridge before doing so, as it may also just be because the frosting got too warm.

Ingredients

  • 115 g butter
  • 230 g cream cheese (plain)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 60 g cocoa powder
  • 380 g powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1-4 tbsp milk

Instructions

  • Take the butter out of the fridge about 10 minutes before making the frosting.
    115 g butter
  • Add the slightly softened butter to a stand mixer and beat briefly. Alternatively, use a mixing bowl and a hand mixer.
  • Add the cold cream cheese and mix with the butter for about 30 seconds.
    230 g cream cheese
  • Add vanilla, cocoa powder, and powdered sugar. Mix on low speed until combined, then increase to medium speed and beat until slightly lighter and fluffy.
    1 tsp vanilla, 60 g cocoa powder, 380 g powdered sugar
  • Gradually add milk and mix until the desired consistency is reached. The frosting should hold its shape when piped but not be too stiff, as that would make piping difficult.
    1-4 tbsp milk

Notes

*Yield: 1 batch is enough to pipe frosting onto 18-20 cupcakes.
