Go-To Vanilla Buttercream Recipe

Vanilla buttercream is the mother of all frostings—smooth, creamy, and bursting with rich vanilla flavor. It’s incredibly easy to make with just a few simple ingredients, yet it transforms any cake or cupcake into something special. This butter-based version skips the shortening for pure, buttery goodness, giving it a melt-in-your-mouth texture and a flavor that’s hard to resist. It holds its shape beautifully when piped, making it perfect for elegant swirls or rustic, fluffy layers. Whether you’re frosting a beautiful birthday cake or just spreading a spoonful onto a cupcake, this buttercream is as versatile as it is delicious.

I remember hanging around our kitchen when my mom made frosting, waiting to lick the spoon. Now, the best part is bringing my own little girls with me into the kitchen when I bake, watching their eyes light up as they sneak a taste straight from the bowl. And let’s be honest—butter, sugar, and vanilla? It doesn’t get better than that!

The classic vanilla buttercream recipe that I’m sharing with you today is the fool-proof recipe I have used for more than a decade. It’s my go-to and safe choice for cupcakes and for filling cakes or frosting cakes. A delicious, stable vanilla buttercream I know will never fail me!

Tips for Making My Vanilla Buttercream Recipe

  • Making buttercream frosting is quick and simple—it’s really just about mixing the ingredients together, much like a basic icing. However, using a stand mixer will give it the fluffiest texture.
  • Make sure the butter is room temperature to achieve the right consistency for piping the buttercream. Take the butter out well in advance of mixing it into the frosting.
  • Vanilla extract provides the best flavor for vanilla buttercream. You can use vanilla powder in a pinch, but it won’t have quite the same taste.

Adjusting the consistency of your buttercream

You can adjust the consistency of your buttercream by adding either more powdered sugar (for a firmer frosting) or more milk (for a softer frosting). Experiment until you achieve the perfect texture for your project. For example, if you’re planning to pipe the buttercream, it should be softer than if you’re spreading it on a cake.
