Perfectly Balanced Nutella Frosting Recipe

This frosting is a dream come true. The rich, sweet hazelnut flavor of Nutella is perfectly balanced with the light, tangy cream cheese base, making for a frosting that’s creamy, fluffy, with just the right sweetness. It’s smooth enough to spread easily, yet firm enough to pipe beautifully onto your cake or cupcakes. Whether you’re frosting a birthday cake or just sprucing up some cupcakes, this frosting will take your treats to the next level.

The flavor? Absolutely divine. You get all the deliciousness of Nutella, but with a slight tanginess from the cream cheese that keeps it from being too sweet or heavy. It’s the ideal balance of nutty richness and a little zing – and it’s impossible to stop at just one bite.

How to Make Nutella Cream Cheese Frosting

Making this Nutella frosting couldn’t be easier. All you need is an electric mixer – a stand mixer (like a KitchenAid) or a hand mixer will do the trick.

Start by beating the butter and cream cheese together until it’s light, fluffy, and smooth. This step is key to getting that airy texture that makes this frosting so irresistible. Once the base is ready, add in the Nutella and mix until fully combined. Then, sift in cocoa powder and powdered sugar, which help balance out the sweetness and give the frosting the right consistency.

If your frosting turns out a bit too thick, just add a little milk. 1-2 tablespoons should do the trick. If it’s too runny, add a little more powdered sugar to thicken it up. It’s that simple!

Storage & Shelf Life

This Nutella cream cheese frosting will keep for about 1 week in an airtight container or piping bag in the fridge. Or, if you’ve made too much (or want to prep ahead), it freezes beautifully for up to 3 months.

To store, just make sure it’s in an airtight plastic bag, pressing out as much air as possible to prevent it from forming a crust. If you’ve had it in the fridge, give it a quick re-whisk and let it come to room temperature before using. If it’s been frozen, let it thaw in the fridge overnight before giving it a good whisk.
