Moist Chocolate Cake with an Orange Twist
This delicious chocolate cake recipe with a touch of orange has become a regular in our home. It’s moist and fluffy, with just the right amount of citrus to make it stand out from your usual chocolate cake. Plus, it’s super easy to make! You can enjoy it on its own or dress it up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or some fresh berries.
Feel free to adjust the amount of orange to suit your taste. But the tangy orange flavor is what really elevates this cake. You can also top it with a frosting—maybe a chocolate buttercream or a rich chocolate ganache—but honestly, it’s pretty amazing just as it is in all its simplicity.
Tips for Baking the Best Chocolate Orange Cake
We’re aiming for a moist, fluffy and absolutely delicious chocolate orange cake, and it’s really quite simple to get there! Just keep these tips in mind:
- Use organic oranges for the best flavor in both the zest and juice. Start by grating the zest and then squeeze the juice.
- Melt the chocolate in the microwave, stirring occasionally. You can use a double boiler if needed, but the microwave is the best method.
- A stand mixer, like a KitchenAid, works best for mixing the batter, but an electric mixer will do the job if that’s what you have.
- Let the cake cool completely before slicing, even though it might be tough to wait!
When is the Chocolate Orange Cake Done?
Baking times can vary a bit depending on your oven. The cake is ready when a skewer or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and without any batter.

- 300 g sugar
- 4 eggs
- 50 g quality dark chocolate
- 180 g flour
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 dl milk
- 1 orange (zest)
- 1 dl orange juice (freshly squeezed)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 175 °C (347 °F). Grease a square baking pan (about 23x33 cm / 9x13 inches) or a round springform pan (about 26 cm / 10 inches).
- Cream the soft butter and sugar together in a stand mixer until light and fluffy. Alternatively, use a hand mixer. Add the eggs and mix briefly.185 g butter, 300 g sugar, 4 eggs
- Melt the dark chocolate in the microwave (remember to stir occasionally), then mix it together with the flour and baking powder. Add the cocoa powder, finely grated milk, orange zest, and orange juice. Combine it with the sugar-butter mixture.50 g quality dark chocolate, 180 g flour, 1 ½ tsp baking powder, 2 tbsp cocoa powder, 1 dl milk, 1 orange, 1 dl orange juice
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake on the lower rack of the oven. A tall chocolate cake in a springform pan will bake for 45-60 minutes. A flatter cake in a square baking pan will bake for 30-40 minutes. Be sure not to overbake the cake, as it will become dry – keep an eye on it.
